I got crutches and a "shoe" for over the cast in elementary school.A clean break in the shinbone will probably lead the doctor to deem him fit for school more readily than a more complicated comminuted fracture of one or more bones (affectionately called a "biscuit fracture" amongst colleagues). He will most likely get around on forearm crutches. A physiotherapist will show him how to do that and how (if he has partial weight-bearing) to put the correct weight on his leg.Most children with broken legs that I've encountered in my professional life so far have been off sick for a while.
